Our design was included as an example of how to create an inviting bedroom with a vintage vibe that includes extra space to relax.

Behind The Bedroom’s Design

We wanted to create an old-meets-new style for this guest bedroom with en suite bathroom. Since the bedroom should be the most peaceful room in the home, we chose a soothing color scheme. Linen White by Benjamin Moore walls are complemented with accents of tranquil blues and corals. We introduced varying shades of blue throughout the room – the bench, tray, throw blanket, pillows, window treatments and artwork. Design tip: by using different shades of the same color in different ways you can add layers of visual interest to the room.

Curating special pieces is what really gives this bedroom a vintage vibe. We combined two twin headboards to create a custom focal point to anchor the king size bed. Old-world brass ginger jar lamps juxtapose new mahogany side tables, and vintage botanical prints and pillows made from vintage textiles complete the look.

And then, there’s the reason our design was included in this Houzz article in the first place – the seating. We try to incorporate seating elements in all of our bedroom designs when space allows. For this room, at the foot of the bed, we placed a bench with an intricately scalloped wood base and upholstered seat with nailhead trim. Off to the side, we set a garden stool.

“Garden stools can have many purposes,” says The Red Shutters Principal Designer, Marina Case. “They are extra seats or a place to set a cup of coffee. I use them all the time. It’s the same with a bench or a tiny love seat, especially if the bed is a bit higher. It’s a place to sit and talk, put on shoes or drop luggage.”
