As the saying goes, “Teamwork makes the dream work,” and that is definitely the case with this design project in Chatham, New York. We like to think of it as the perfect trifecta: interior designer, architect, client. This proper New England farmhouse with expansive windows that overlook stunning views of the Hudson Valley toward the Hudson River is the perfect canvas for us to jump right in. We were retained to “decorate” which encompasses overseeing the home’s window treatments, wallpaper, carpets, bedding and all furnishings.
The clients were heavily involved in the overall design, sharing inspiration photos and providing many fantastic antiques and vintage items for us to work with. As they walked Marina, The Red Shutters’ principal designer, through their collection, she photographed an inventory then created an album as reference for the home’s overall design.
After taking in the space, colors, collection, and the client’s aesthetic, Marina got to work creating a soft, cozy design. The warmth of a room starts with the right layout. The placement of furniture in the Living Room floor plan creates an environment conducive for enjoying a cup of coffee overlooking the tranquil landscape out the wall of windows, curling up on the couch in front of a warm fire after a long day, spending the evening watching a movie, or carrying on intimate conversations. The Dining Room’s extendable table with comfy chairs are perfect for everyday meals and gatherings with family and friends.

With the layout set, next up was the fun part! From the images provided, Marina was instantly able to see that the client definitely prefers a more traditional aesthetic and is drawn to primary colors: reds, blues, and greens. Leaning into this and the previously chosen paint colors (mostly neutral shades from Farrow & Ball along with some pops of bolder hues), Marina and her team started to pull together a color scheme for the textiles and furnishings.

Then, with careful planning, the client’s collection was thoughtfully worked into each room, augmented with suggestions to complete the design concept.
“I met with the client in the heart of construction, laying out my design ideas,” said Marina. “And we’ve been working together on this project ever since, from selecting carpets to choosing lighting to sourcing wallpaper while I was in London because of the clients’ love of a British aesthetic.”

Here are a few of pics of the progress.

The foundation for our interior design services for this project was laid by Catherine Truman Architects. Catherine designed the home and selected the soothing base color palette. She did an amazing job, as the design is historically correct – something we don’t always see in new builds.
Stay tuned to see how we brought our ideas to life in this whole home interior design project.
