New York’s Westchester County is dotted with older homes bursting with character – the perfect canvas for our design style. Anyone who follows us knows that we have a passion for highlighting architectural and period elements, while simultaneously designing a room that feels fresh and updated. We strive to create a balance that seamlessly blends the old with the new for an inviting, contemporary vibe. And that’s just what we are doing for a family in South Salem who recently purchased a turn of the century gem.
“This home was designed by one of my favorite architectural firms, McKim, Mead & White,” said Marina Case, The Red Shutters’ principal designer. “From the late 19th century through the early 20th, what is referred to as the Gilded Age, buildings inspired by old world grandeur were the rage. McKim, Mead & White created masterpieces during this time, such as the original Pennsylvania Station and the Boston Public Library.”
We are so honored to be working on the interior of a home designed by this iconic firm. The spaces will pay homage to the building’s spectacular architecture, like this front entry detail.
Breathing New Life Through a Colorful Palette
Working closely with our clients, who are in their 30s with small children – and another on the way – we are ditching the home’s previous dodgy and dated interior and focusing on fun, starting with the color scheme. This couple exudes a vibrant personality, and they deserve a home that matches it!
We are tasked with the interior design of the entire house, so we have created a palette that works together from room to room for a cohesive feel. Advising that they wanted it very bright and fun, the clients handed us the colors for the stairway, which are a unicorn rainbow theme. This was the springboard for our inspiration that includes colorful trim in the children’s rooms for a light and whimsical feel. Color selection is in progress, but here are the plans so far:
The clients knew they wanted to incorporate wallpaper in the dining room, the children’s bedrooms. Working from their initial charge of doing a fun color palette, they chose 101 Dalmations wallpaper from Sanderson for the daughter’s bedroom and Winnie the Pooh wallpaper from Sanderson for the son’s room. They were married at the Bronx Zoo, so they were inspired to go a bit more wild with the wallpaper choice for the dining room and landed on a super fun tiger stripe from Gracie Wallpaper. And we love the bold blue print in the powder room, which is from Hygge & West.

Next Up – Layout
Once we started nailing down the color choices, we moved on to laying out the room so we could begin selecting the furnishings. Our clients have some great pieces we are going to incorporate into the design, which will augment with items we have begun curating.
Here’s a peek at our initial thoughts on placement.
